Why?
Annaholty Green Energy is a sister company of GreenGas AD Plant, Ireland’s first commercial- scale anaerobic digestion plant. Since 2010, Greengas AD Plant has been operating successfully in Shanagolden, Co. Limerick, pioneering renewable gas production in Ireland. Building on this success, we are now proposing a new state-of-the-art AD Plant in Annaholty, Co. Tipperary. This facility will produce biomethane for direct injection into the national gas grid, contributing to Ireland’s clean energy transition and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels with a sustainable alternative.
- The project has the capacity to generate up to 40 GWh of renewable gas each year—enough to supply approximately 3,200 homes with clean, locally produced energy.
- In addition to reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the facility will create new income streams for local farmers by sourcing sustainable feedstock from the surrounding area, helping to support rural development and strengthen the local economy.
- The facility will operate to the highest standards of safety and environmental care and will be licensed and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
When?
Ireland has committed to producing 10% of its gas from biomethane by 2030 under the National Biomethane Strategy, which will require 150–200 new plants producing a total of 5.7 TWh. Biomethane offers a secure, home-grown energy source that reduces reliance on imports and supports the decarbonisation of the gas network. This project contributes directly to Ireland’s climate and energy goals, helping cut greenhouse gas emissions while advancing the development of a local, renewable energy industry.
Why?
We expect to submit a planning application for the proposed Annaholty AD plant in the autumn of 2025.
